Experience

Vicky Giouroukakis, Ph.D., is a Professor in the School of Education and Human Services at Molloy University, Rockville Centre, New York. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in literacy, English education, strategies of teaching, and TESOL. Prior to her tenure at Molloy, Vicky taught English at a public high school in Queens, NY, and ESL to adolescents and adults.

Vicky has published over 60 journal articles and chapters in the last 15 years. Her research and publications center on the topics of adolescent literacy, standards, assessment, and cultural/linguistic diversity.

Vicky’s latest publication (2023) is an anthology of essays, Growing Up in an Immigrant Household and Community: Essays by Descendants of Immigrants, published by Kendall Hunt.

She has co-authored four books. Her most recent co-authored publication is the Kendall Hunt textbook, Back to the Basics of Teaching: Best Practices for Diverse Learners (2020). Vicky has also co-authored the ASCD book, Achieving Next Generation Literacy: Using the Tests (You Think) You Hate to Teach the Students You Love (2016) as well as the Corwin bestseller Getting to the Core of English Language Arts, Grades 6–12: How to Meet the Common Core State Standards with Lessons from the Classroom (2012), and Getting to the Core of Literacy for History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects, Grades 6-12 (2013).

During her tenure at Molloy, Vicky has conducted over 85 presentations/workshops at regional, national, and international conferences and has consulted for public schools in Long Island as well as the Brooklyn/Queens Diocese.

In 2006, Vicky established the English Language Arts (ELA) Education Advisory Board at Molloy College and has served as Chair ever since. She has been coordinating the ELA summer professional development programs since 2008. She has also co-organized the annual Long Island ESOL conference since 2005.

Vicky has served on the Executive Board of the New York State English Council (NYSEC) and the Board of Directors of St. Agnes Academic High School. In 2018-2020, Vicky joined the Superintendents/College Presidents (SCPP) Writing Skills Workgroup, a college readiness workgroup. She is also the advisor of the Molloy College Greek Club. Vicky received the NYSEC Educator of Excellence Award in 2010, the Research Achievement Award from Molloy College in 2015, and the President's Medal of Distinguished Service in 2020.

Vicky's volunteer work includes her roles as President of the Archangel Michael Church (AMC) Greek Language Institute, Coordinator of the AMC Cooking Club, and Co-President of a charity, The Tower Foundation of Manhasset, which raises funds for Manhasset public schools.
